25 Things I Learned While I Was 25

25 things I learned while being 25

Today is my 26th birthday!  These 365 days of being 25 years old has been the best yet!! I started Sequins are the New Black, moved in with Greg, started a new job that I love and saw some of my best friends get married! I thought it would be fun to do a themed shoot today so I could wear this white tulle skirt! I’m slightly obsessed with tulle skirts so I knew my birthday was the perfect opportunity to break one out!

In honor of turning 26, I also wanted to share 25 things that I have learned along the way through this pretty little life of mine. Some are fun, while others are more serious but each equally play a part in the person I am today 🙂

Tulle Skirt: Charlotte Russe | Top: J.Crew old { similar here here} | Heels: Steve Madden | Earrings: J.Crew

Wash off your makeup at the end of every day, even if you’re tired & don’t want to. Your face will thank you the next morning that you put in the effort {even if you were half asleep doing it}. I love crisp, white pillowcases & my goal is to keep them white 🙂

Be the person the person you are looking for is looking for. I stumbled upon Andy Stanley  a couple years ago, he’s a pastor at North Point Church and this saying really stuck with me. If you’re going through a breakup I strongly recommend listening to him, you can watch him speak here.

No one’s life looks as cool as it does on Instagram. Comparing your life to someone else and what they have will never make you satisfied. You’re right where you’re supposed to be.

Think before you speak. This one has 3 parts 1.Always be aware of your surroundings. 2.Sometimes it is better to say nothing at all. 3.Words can hurt, be mindful of what you say to others.

Go with your gut. There are a few major instances in my life that I can now look back on and realized that I went against my better judgement. I decided from there on out that if an option didn’t feel right I would not engage.

Always be honest. That little white lie could ruin a relationship and trust is really hard to get back. Tell the truth, you’ll feel better.

It’s okay to be alone. I know it sounds so cliche but being happy with yourself before getting into a serious relationship is so important. If you aren’t happy single, than you wont be happy in a relationship either.

Not every friendship is meant to be forever. There are a lot of mundane things in this world, friendships and relationships should not be one of them. Sometimes friendships you thought would last forever go in another direction and thats okay.

Analyze and think about how to improve from your mistakes. Nobody is perfect. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, whether it be at work, in my relationships or with my friends. After every mistake I try and focus in on what happened, how it happened and how I can avoid that from happening again.

Share your struggles & failures. Speak up and tell your stories, you never know who you could be helping.

Invest in a silk pillowcase & good night cream. In the last year I have really stepped up my anti-aging game- higher SPF, taking evening primrose oil, wearing hats in the sun, etc. Since getting my silk pillowcase  for Christmas, I wake up  with little to no lines on my face, less breakouts and overall better skin.

Travel every chance you get. I like to travel cheap and travel often. When my roommate invited me to go to Ireland to visit her family I said yes, when thinking of Greg’s birthday present last year I decided on a trip to Charleston, SC..I try to take every and any opportunity to travel and see the world!

Visit your grandparents. The smile on my Meme’s (French for grandmother) face when I walk into her room at the nursing home warms my heart. She is my last living grandparent so I try to see her as often as possible, plus it’s so interesting finding out more about where my family came from.

It really is about who you know. Walking up to someone new and introducing yourself could open up so many doors!

Floss everyday. My dental hygienist friend, Nicole always says “you wouldn’t use the restroom without washing your hands, why would you eat without flossing?” Floss everyday people, it takes two minutes 😉  I put a post-it-note on my bathroom mirror that says “FLOSS BIOTCH” to hold myself accountable!

Good Posture is key. God only gave us one spine, stand up straight!

Always stand up for yourself. No one else will have your back like you do.

Never stop learning. When I first started my blog I had ZERO idea what I was doing in turns of making a website, or what search engine optimization was all about. It’s been so fun to challenge myself and learn something new that I’m passionate about. When you stop learning you stop living.

Paying off debt should be your #1 priority. Although this particular one didn’t happen while I was 25 I still think it’s extremely important to share. There is absolutely no better feeling than clicking the mouse on your last student loan payment. FREEDOM!! Peace out Sally Mae!

It’s okay to say no. I’m now completely okay saying no to things that do not make me happy just to please others. Life is too short.

Going to the movies by yourself is wonderful. I recently took myself out on a hot Saturday night to the movie theater and it was awesome! 10 years ago I would have thought I was committing social suicide but it has now become a little me time getaway.

Invest in yourself. Whether it be a gym membership, an online course to learn something new or a facial, the only person who cares the most about your well being is you!

Say no to cheap alcohol. Life is too short for cheap tequila & boxed wine..hangovers aren’t cute and the weekend is too precious to be wasted in bed all day.

Read more books. I hated reading when I was little, I remember having screaming matches with my mom over my summer reading lists..oh my poor mother. The last few years I have really gotten into reading and loving it! If you haven’t read The Girl on the Train , get on it now!

Always send Thank you notes . Everyone loves getting mail that isn’t a bill. Sending a simple thank you note to the hostess after they open their home to you will always put a smile on their face!

What are some things you’ve learned so far?

Thank you so much for stopping by!
