Darling DIY Metallic Bar Cart

The bar cart: every Type A girl’s best friend!

I am such a sucker for IKEA, along with a good DIY project. I’ve been dying for a bar cart ever since I moved into my apartment over a year ago but the thought of spending $200-$300 on something that was going to display bottles of tequila.. uhhh PASS! My friends refer to my apartment as “the princess palace”  so I made the executive decision that no “palace” was complete without one. I wanted something that was cute, versatile and wouldn’t deplete my wallet. Unfortunately my exact bar cart Ikea no longer carries but I found a similar model, introducing the IKEA Sunnersta utility cart! This baby goes for only $30 and was pretty easy to assemble! {thanks Greg!} A can of metallic spray paint and some fabulous accessories was all I needed to glam up the original ugly grey color cart! My motto in life is there is nothing a little metallic and glitter can’t fix 😉  This DIY is too chic & simple to pass up.

First things first was assembling the cart-there were 9 steps to this process {make sure to leave the white pieces to the side to avoid getting paint on them}. I then sprayed the first coat with Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold Paint resulting in the perfect gold finish-looks so luxe! Make sure to do this step in a well ventilated area. After 2 coats, let it dry and top it off with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Paint. Finish off by screwing in the white shelves to the painted frame, you’re going to have to take off one side in order to slide in the shelves. Honestly, this was the toughest part, I found I needed an extra set of hands- 1 person to screw in the screws and 1 person to hold the frame together.

It’s now time to raise the bar on the bar cart! To take the glamorization of my cart one step further I used this white marble contact paper to cover the white shelves. It added that last WOW factor I was looking for. This once grey little cart is now my favorite piece of furniture in the house! Heres how to add the marble paper:

+ Lay down a piece of the marble contact paper about the size of the bar cart shelve.
+ Peel off the back of the contact paper, stick it down {try to avoid bubbles but if you do get one pop it in the middle to smooth out}, then cut off the excess with your X-acto knife.

Now onto the fun part, accessorizing your new sparkly cart! I added:

IKEA Utility Cart

Rust- Oleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint

Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Paint

Pour yourself a cocktail & enjoy! Thanks so much for stopping by!

With love & sequins, Tess

Love the blog Tess! Your outfits have definitely inspired some of my looks recently! Great bar cart post, I did the exact same thing to the ikea cart this past summer but didn’t use the marble contact paper, it is such a nice touch and I’ll have to add it! Thanks for the tip!
